Liposuction and Weight Loss- Can I Lose Weight with Liposuction?
Liposuction isn’t a weight loss treatment, although this is a common misconception. If liposuction isn’t for weight loss, what does it do? We like to call it a body contouring procedure. It is designed to target those stubborn fat pockets that remain after you’ve lost weight. Many of these procedures have cutesy names like muffin tops, love handles, and saddle bags. By targeting specific trouble spots, we can shape and contour your body, giving you the curves you want, but can’t achieve on your own.
Although liposuction isn’t designed for weight loss, that doesn’t mean you won’t lose weight. Many of our liposuction patients lose a few pounds after the procedure. Even if you don’t lose weight, plan on losing inches. Clothing looks and fits better after liposuction. You may even find that you drop a size or two post-procedure.
How Can Liposuction Help Me Jumpstart My Fitness Goals?
Going to gym and not seeing the desired results can be very frustrating. You’re working hard, why isn’t that fat going away? Stubborn, diet/exercise resistant fat is a reality. Once you have this fat, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate on your own. Healthy eating and exercise are important, but they may not be enough to get rid of those stubborn rolls and bulges.
Liposuction is the solution. We remove the unwanted fat cells using suction through small incisions. These fat cells are permanently gone and won’t regenerate. This means lasting improvement in the treated areas. As you see results, you’ll want to work hard to maintain them.
Maintain Your Liposuction Results
Liposuction results can last and last, provided you take care of your body. After investing time and money into liposuction, you’ll want to maintain your results. Here’s what you need to do:
- Maintain a Stable Weight– Big weight fluctuations, either up or down, can change your liposuction results. Weight gain causes fat cells to grow, and although there are fewer fat cells in the treated area, the ones that remain can still accumulate fat. You may notice new bulges in other areas or fat gain in the treated area if you gain a lot of weight. Too much weight loss can also be problematic after liposuction. Losing weight changes the contours we’ve created and can lead to loose skin and other problems. Try to remain at a stable weight if you can. Small weight fluctuations are normal and expected.
- Eat Right– Healthy eating can help you avoid weight gain. Load up on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- Exercise Often– Sculpt your body at the gym. Regular exercise builds up muscle that can enhance your look and improve your liposuction results. Exercise also burns calories and helps you to avoid fat gain.
- Wait Until You are Finished Having Children– Pregnancy can cause stubborn fat to develop. Although pregnancy is safe after liposuction, it can change the appearance of your results. If you experience post-pregnancy changes to your appearance, come see Dr. Clinton for a mommy makeover after you’re finished having kids.
Many of our patients find that maintaining their look after liposuction is easy because they are excited about their look and motivated by their new body.
When Can I Return to Exercise After Liposuction?
You’ll see results after liposuction and may feel inspired to return to an active lifestyle, however, you’ll need to wait. Liposuction patients will need a recovery period to fully heal from their procedure. Plan on skipping exercise for about 4-6 weeks after surgery. We’ll give you the all-clear before you return to the gym and other strenuous activities. Your liposuction results will continue to improve as healing progresses and swelling dissipates.
