Gynecomastia Surgery in Birmingham

While the development of male breast tissue is not uncommon in men of all ages, it can be a source of embarrassment. Certainly, it may be more of an issue in summer, making men reluctant to remove their shirts on the beach or at the swimming pool. The condition is called Gynecomastia, and a surgical procedure called Male Breast Reduction can correct it.

To determine if surgery is the best option, the cause of gynecomastia should first be investigated. If a drug or disease can be blamed, appropriate medical treatment should be pursued.

Dr. Clinton or Dr. Pearce can provide expert advice about your best course of action. They give all of their patients a great deal of one-on-one attention, and they are both great listeners who are empathetic to your concerns. Most importantly, they have the training and experience to evaluate your case carefully and create a unique surgical plan for you.

What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis using a light general anesthetic. There can be flexibility in anesthetic choice depending on your characteristics and procedures selected.

For some patients, energy-assisted lipoplasty may be sufficient to remove the excess tissue and flatten the chest. In this case, the fat is removed using a type of liposuction. The technique encourages better skin tightening and can produce a more pleasing final contour.

For others, excess skin, fat, and/or glandular tissue may need to be surgically removed. For lipoplasty, the incisions are small – just large enough for a cannula to be inserted, which is then attached to the liposuction device. With tissue excision, an incision along the lower edge of the areola may be necessary.

After the appropriate time in our recovery room, you can go home in the care of a friend or family member. You should not drive for 24 hours, due to the effects of the anesthesia.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery?

We will send you home with written instructions for how to take care of yourself after your surgery. This will be a reinforcement of verbal instructions you will receive on several occasions. You will also be evaluated no later than the day after your procedure and monitored during your recovery period. We encourage you to call us if you have any questions at all.

You must wear compression garments under your clothes full-time for one month and half of the time for an additional two weeks.

Some bruising, swelling, and discomfort are expected after surgery. Swelling is usually the last side effect to go away completely. The scars will improve over time, and we will give you instructions to speed their healing.

If you experience pain, you can take oral medications. Non-prescription meds are usually sufficient, but if you need something stronger, please use the prescription provided.

Most men return to office work within a week, but we will discuss this with you based on your individual case. We will provide you with a post-operative plan to help you return to all normal day-to-day activities as soon as possible. There should be no heavy lifting, strenuous activity or “straining” for two weeks, however.

Results are often permanent, but they can certainly be impacted by weight loss/gain, environmental factors, and the natural aging process.
