The skin around our eyes is particularly delicate and prone to the signs of aging. Bags under the eyes or sagging upper eyelids are common problems that can make us look older than we actually are. An eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is an excellent solution that can have a big impact on the whole face, and insurance companies might cover the cost of the procedure.
Eyelid surgery can be done on the upper or lower eyelids or both. Dr. Clinton and Dr. Pearce have performed countless successful blepharoplasty surgeries. Not only do they give you a great deal of one-on-one attention, but they are also great listeners and are empathetic to your concerns. Most importantly, they have the training and experience to evaluate your case carefully and create a unique surgical plan for you.
Some patients combine Eyelid Surgery with other procedures, such as a Facelift or Forehead/Brow Lift.
Eyelid Surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under a light general anesthetic, and some patients may benefit from an overnight hospital stay with early discharge the next morning. There can be flexibility in anesthetic choices depending on your unique characteristics.
The classic incision for upper blepharoplasty is hidden within the folds of the eyelids. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the incision is closed.
For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made just under the eyelash margin or inside the lower eyelid. In either case, the scars are well-hidden. An external pinch technique can be used to reduce excess skin, and bags can be removed to create an overall smoother, tighter lower eyelid area. A technique called lateral canthoplasty can be done to improve eyelid support laxity.
After the appropriate time in our recovery area, you can go home with the help of a friend or family member. You should not drive for 24 hours, due to the effects of the anesthesia.
We will send you home with written instructions for how to take care of yourself after your surgery. This will be a reinforcement of verbal instructions that you will receive on several occasions. You will also be evaluated no later than the day after your procedure and monitored during your recovery period. We encourage you to call us if you have any questions at all.
Some bruising, swelling, and discomfort are expected after surgery. Swelling is usually the last side effect to go away completely. The scars will improve over time, and we will give you instructions to speed their healing.
If you experience pain, you can take oral medications. Non-prescription meds are usually sufficient, but if you need something stronger, please use the prescription provided. We will also provide eye drops. You may experience some tearing, crusting, and/or eye dryness during the healing process.
You must avoid heavy lifting and any strenuous activity or “straining” for two weeks. Most patients return to office work within 7-10 days, but we will discuss this with you based on your individual case. We will provide you with a post-operative plan to help you return to all normal day-to-day activities as soon as possible.
Results from eyelid surgery are long-lasting, but environmental factors and the natural aging process can affect the eyelids over time.
